Why Is the USA an Empire?

America is more ways an empire than not.  We are the dominant power on the planet, often acting as the world policeman.  We dominate in the institutions we created for global governance after World War II.  We abandoned the wisdom of the founding fathers that warn to avoid a large standing army and excessive foreign entanglements.  Control of large areas of land outside of the original nation state is just not the way Americans like to do business or see themselves; we like to think we are a democracy, when in fact we are an empire.  As we have lost social mobility compared to Europe and become a class society; the new ruling elite is increasing, dominated by militarism.  Militarism casts a huge shadow over all of us, giving us high crime and poor health.

How Did We Get This Way?  Follow the money; changes in the military budget best explain the America we’ve become with a prolonged case of empire.  Come discuss this new vision, and the new empirical findings underlying our situation with Robert Reuschlein. Come with your tough questions ready.  Our new guiding light has become power rather than achievement.
